Far
East Noble is a Parallax distributors in Pulau Pinang in
Malaysia. Owner Allen Cheah saw the need to open his workshop
to students free of charge. Far East Noble also has a new
facility located nearby, to conduct PBASIC training Seminars
and to accommodate with the growing number of students. The
workshop started about two and a half years ago while Allen
was promoting BASIC stamps to college students.
Allen commented :
"I noticed
that most students are quite weak and do not have hands-on
experience when it comes to lab work. So I decided to let
them use my lab and facilities. It gives them a place to
learn from each other and their questions are answered on
the spot. Here they learn making circuits, layout technique,
etching PCB, debugging, to finally understanding BASIC Stamps
and how to use them on their final year projects."
The students come from the colleges
in the region. There are no less than 10 private and state
owned colleges in Penang which offer Diploma (2 years) and
Degree (4 years). Most of these students are Electronics or
Mechatronics majors and they use BASIC Stamps to do their
final year projects.
Periodically, they
take in some of the more experienced students as Industrial
Trainees to help guide the new students and to maintain
continuity and cohesiveness of the learning environment.
Owner
Allen Cheah says :
" I see
these students move on with a very strong set of skill and
knowledge. One of them is now in Oklahoma Central State
U, doing EE and working as an assistant to his professor
on NASA project. A number of them landed very good jobs
with MNCs."
